Russula has supplied a new water treatment plant for Nucor Steel’s 700,000 tpy merchant bar mill located in Bourbonnais, Illinois, USA. It is a greenfield installation built adjacent to the existing mill.
The new facility treats and cools 3,233 gpm (734 m3/h) of water that comes in direct contact with the production of merchant bars, rebar, rounds, flats and angles. 1,930 gpm (438 m3/h) of water is used for indirect cooling for the furnace and 941 gpm (214 m3/h) for the rolling mill.
The scope of supply included basic engineering, mechanical and electrical equipment. Inside the scope of basic engineering was mechanical, electrical and civil for the contact, non-contact and make up water circuits. The water treatment plant layout is divided into four areas; scale pit, decanting, filtering and cooling. A new sludge management system has enabled Nucor Steel Kankakee to reduce sludge weight and volume, which in turn reduces disposal costs.
The new water treatment plant was successfully commissioned and tested as scheduled.
