Big River Steel Water Treatment Plant Phase II

Russula supplied the complete 92,000 gpm water treatment solution for Big River Steel, LEED-certified Flex Mill™ expansion in in Osceola, AK, USA. With the addition of a second electric arc furnace and CSP® casting strand, the entire water treatment complex now treats 246,000 gpm of water critical to the production of 3 MT of hot, flat-rolled steel.

Three new water treatment areas were added to the original layout for the EAF, casting and wastewater areas. The existing HSM and makeup water areas were expanded. Russula supplied the civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, water treatment equipment, piping, cabling, electrical and control systems, and technical support. Energy efficiency, water preservation and environmental stewardship were the main design criteria to provide Big River Steel with a sustainable water treatment complex.

Water trials for each individual area began in September 2020. As each area was completed, flushing, commissioning and checkout were performed prior to the plant outage in October. The high level of commitment and cooperation between the Big River Steel and Russula teams was essential for the Flex Mill^™ expansion to be commissioned in November 2020, two months earlier than the original schedule.
