AHMSA (Altos Hornos de Mexico) transferred a 68 inch hot strip mill from Sparrows Point, MD to replace their current mill, increasing the plant's production capacity by 10%. Having a capacity of 2.8 million tpy, the new hot strip mill is located a couple of meters upstream from the current mill.
AHMSA contracted Russula to provide engineering services for the first stage of the complex equipment transfer project. Russula was responsible for the design, supervision and construction of the new foundations to support the new mill.
To ensure the building could support the weight of the new hot strip mill during the equipment transfer operation, Russula conducted a feasibility study of the structure to determine the required modifications and developed the reinforcement engineering.
Since most of the work was accomplished while the current mill was in operation, Russula’s main concern during the project was safety. As a result Russula designed, manufactured and installed a new support for the roller table through which production passed during the excavation and construction of the foundations.
The new roller table, designed and manufactured by Russula ensured that AHMSA had smooth production during the 2.4 million tons/year hot strip mill installation.
