Over the course of four years, Nucor Steel Utah and Russula upgraded the automation and drives of rolling mill #2. The project was broken down into three phases. For all phases of the project Russula supplied the electrical and controls solution, installation supervision, commissioning and training.
The scope of phase 2 included the cut-to-length area from the cooling bed aligning rolls thru the cold shear and straightener. As this was the second phase of the mill upgrade the key was the full integration with the first phase, the upgrade of the stacker. Thus the two phases were fully integrated into the same HMI and data acquisition systems. A dedicated operator desk was installed just for the cut-to-length area. The scope of supply included Rockwell Contrologix PLCs, ABB DCS800 DC drives and Rockwell PowerFlex 755 AC drives, communication via Ethernet IP. The new controls fully automated the operations of the cut-to-length area and improved machine sequencing.
