The Nucor Steel plant in Norfork, Nebraska, USA implemented a multi-phase upgrade over the course of four years. In 2015, the project began with the automation and drives upgrade for the rod block and laying head and the electrical and control system engineering for the roughing and intermediate mills. The multi-phase revamp allowed the mill to schedule the switchover and commissioning at the best possible time for production.
The scope the Phase 1 upgrade included all the equipment in the rolling mill roughing and intermediate areas from the entry pinchrolll until the finishing end before the Kocks block and the demag shear.
Once Phase 1 was completed, the new Russula Mill Control application controled the lubrication and hydraulic units with the ControlLogix 1756 processors. The Controllogix system was integrated into the existing Automax control system.
